Dear General Surgery Applicant,

Welcome to the University of Virginia General Surgery Residency Program!

I am delighted that you have chosen to pursue the excellent training opportunities that we provide.  UVA Surgery has a long and distinguished national reputation as a premier academic training program.  Superior clinical training coupled with top-notch research defines our academic tradition.  Our residents annually publish close to 50 peer-reviewed papers and receive institutional and national recognition for their research, medical student teaching, and mentorship. Accordingly, our graduates are consistently accepted into the fellowship training programs of their choice.

The UVA Department of Surgery faculty, led by our current Chairman, Irving L. Kron, M.D., epitomize academic surgical leadership.  Only five individuals have held the chairmanship of our Department during the last century, including two previous Presidents of the American College of Surgeons.  Dr. Kron, a past president of the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, currently serves as Vice President to the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, and is Chair of the Residency Review Committee for Thoracic Surgery.  Bradley M. Rodgers, M.D., is past president of the American Academy of Pediatric Surgeons.  John B. Hanks, M.D., is past president of the Southeastern Surgical Association, and I am a past president of SAGES and the AHPBA, current president of the Society of Clinical Surgeons and president-elect of the Fellowship Council.  Drs. Kron, Rodgers, Hanks, and I have also been or are Directors of the American Board of Surgery, and Dr. Rodgers serves on the Residency Review Committee for Surgery.  Dr. Timothy Pruett is the immediate past president of the United Network Organ System.

At UVA, we are dedicated to continuing our pursuit of excellence in clinical surgery, teaching, and surgical research. We hope that you will consider applying to our program and joining us in this mission.

Please visit our applicant websites for detailed information about our program.  Should you have any additional inquires, feel free contact our General Surgery Residency Program Coordinator, Annie Copeland by telephone at (434) 924-9307 or by email at mac2v@virginia.edu.  Thank you for your interest and consideration, and best of luck to you all in future surgical careers.

Sincerely,

Bruce D. Schirmer, MD
