Clinical Training
Though a vast array of simulation modalities, the center offers clinical training with an interactive collaborative learning environment for the UME, GME, and community populations. Examples of recent training activities are highlighted below:
Life Saving Techniques Workshop
The Life Saving Techniques Workshop is a full-day session for third-year medical students utilizing multiple low and high-fidelity simulation modalities. The experience is aimed to teach specific life saving procedures and assess the ability to apply knowledge, recently-acquired procedural techniques, communication skills and teamwork in the care of a simulated critically ill trauma patient.
Toxic Syndromes: Emergency Response, Recognition, and Management
This course, piloted with the UVa Medical Reserve Corps, aims train healthcare providers at all levels who may need to care for the acute toxic effects of hazardous chemicals from accidents or terrorism. The curriculum includes the principles of patient decontamination, personal protective actions and equipment, toxic syndrome recognition, and the medical management of poisoned patients using high fidelity human patient simulation.
Anesthesiology Boot Camp
The Department of Anesthesiology recently restructured the first four weeks of clinical experience for new residents. This includes a week of "Boot Camp" which integrates intensive lectures, workshops, and case conferences and culminates in simulation experiences geared toward case preparation, routine anesthetic induction and management, and crisis recognition.
Emergency Medicine Resident Compentencies
The Department of Emergency Medicine residency program includes a weekly didactic conference required for all residents. Procedure workshops are held on a monthly basis to augment didactic time, and allow for discussion and practice of critical emergency procedures. Prior workshops have included ENT & Ophthalmologic procedures, Hypo/Hyperthermic emergencies, ATLS, Mass Casualty & Disaster Drill and Difficult Airway Skills.
