Dr. Alan Matsumoto, Professor of Radiology and Interim ChairmanThe Department of Radiology at the University of Virginia is a dynamic growing department with an energetic faculty, outstanding residents and fellows, highly skilled technical and administrative staff, and excellent equipment.  The Department takes pride in consistently targeting excellence in clinical care, teaching, and research as its top priorities.

The Department is organized into Divisions of Angiography and Interventional Radiology, Breast Imaging, Pediatric and ThoracoAbdominal Radiology, Neuroradiology, Nuclear Medicine, Musculoskeletal Radiology, and Radiology Research.  Many of our Faculty are nationally and internationally acknowledged as experts in their area of specialty interest with widely recognized contributions to clinical care, education of trainees, and leading edge imaging research.  We currently have 38 full-time clinical faculty and 11 research faculty.

Our clinical services include all aspects of Diagnostic Radiology including active intervention and treatment services provided by the Neuroradiology, ThoracoAbdominal, and Angiography/ Interventional Radiology Divisions.  State-of-the-art imaging equipment is available in the hospital and at outlying sites including UVA Imaging, Outpatient Diagnostic Imaging Centers, at the Fontaine Research Park.

Our residency training program in Diagnostic Radiology is considered to be one of the best in the nation.  Admission to the program is highly competitive with a large number of applicants considered for residency positions each year.  Subspecialty fellowship training programs are offered in Neuroradiology, Abdominal Imaging, Breast Imaging, Musculoskeletal Radiology, Angiography/Interventional Radiology, and Neuroradiology Intervention.  Our medical student elective in Diagnostic Radiology is the most popular elective in our School of Medicine.  Our faculty serve as invited speakers and visiting professors at numerous national and international conferences and facilities each year.

Our Department is a leader in research, ranking as one of the departments with greatest research grant support within the University.   A main thrust of our research effort is directed toward magnetic resonance (MR) imaging.  Our Department has three MR scanners dedicated to research with a fourth research MR scanner soon to be installed.  Research projects include hyperpolarized gas imaging and a wide variety of MR cardiac imaging and interventional projects performed in conjunction with our Cardiology colleagues.

We invite you to review our capabilities as detailed on this website and contact us by email or telephone with any questions regarding our clinical services, educational or research opportunities.
