In 2007 UVa's Department of Urology received a US News & World Report ranking as one of the top urology centers. Faculty in the department are ranked in America’s Top Doctors. Published annually by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., this book recognizes physicians who are considered among the best in their specialties in both patient care and research. To receive the award, doctors must be nominated by their peers.
Innovation
UVa Urology faculty are on the leading edge of medical research into prostate and bladder cancers. UVa has leading technology in Urology:
- DaVinci robotic surgery system for minimally-invasive prostate and bladder surgery
- Advanced use of brachytherapy (radioactive “seeds”) to place radiation directly where needed, sparing healthy tissue
- Ongoing research into genetic markers for cancers, overactive bladder, and urinary tract obstruction
