Innovation
The UVa Heart and Vascular Center was first in Virginia to:

Establish an Atrial Fibrillation Center for the treatment of irregular heartbeats, including ablations that send electrical impulses to misfiring heartbeats via catheters

Perform open-heart surgery

Receive Medicare approval for heart and lung transplants

Establish an Electrophysiology Lab to treat heart rhythms

Offer echocardiography and nuclear cardiology procedures
And, UVa was first in the U.S. to perform renal angioplasty.
