The National Institutes of Health has designated UVa as one of the nation’s few Silvio O. Conte Digestive Disease Research Centers. US News & World Report has also recognized UVa as one of the top centers for digestive disorders. Faculty at UVa are some of the world leaders in research for digestive conditions like Crohn's Disease and are leading a national trial in living-donor liver transplant that could increase the options and outcomes for patients facing liver transplant.

Innovation
UVa’s Digestive Health Center of Excellence leads the region in technological innovation for digestive disease. These include:

  • A state-of-the-art advanced dedicated endoscopy suite for minimally invasive procedures
  • Advanced diagnostic approaches like endoscopic ultrasound, that can help locate and diagnose cancers of the gastrointestinal tract
  • Advanced use of stents: UVa patients were among the first in the nation to receive the next generation of stents for the treatment of obstructive jaundice, a major complication of pancreatic cancer.
