Welcome

photo of KCRCThe Kluge Children's Rehabilitation Center (KCRC) is dedicated to serving children with special needs and their families.

Children from birth to age 21 come to the KCRC from across Virginia, the U.S., and overseas. Some need specific therapy or rehabilitation after an injury, accident or surgery. Others have a chronic illness such as diabetes or cystic fibrosis. Many families come to find out why their child is having difficulties walking, talking, learning, or eating, or is experiencing behavior problems.

The KCRC is part of the University of Virginia Children's Hospital. We are located on 12 acres, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, about two miles west of the main UVA Health System grounds.

Accredited Programs

The KCRC is fully accredited by the Joint Commission, and also by the Commission on Accreditation for Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for its Comprehensive Integrated Inpatient and Outpatient Medical Rehabilitation Programs, with special recognition for Pediatric and Family-Centered Care.

In addition to inpatient and outpatient programs, KCRC offers Day Treatment for patients who benefit from intensive therapy but who do not need to be in the hospital overnight.

Parent-Professional Partnerships

therapy photoAt the KCRC, a team of pediatric professionals works together with parents to help each child become as independent and competent as possible. We recognize that both medical and emotional needs must be considered to promote effective healing, rehabilitation, and adjustment to the child's impairment, activity limitations (functional abilities), or participation restrictions (roles in society). Emphasis is placed on reinforcing a child's strengths and coping skills. All of the KCRC's treatment programs, educational programs, research, and advocacy efforts are directed toward these ends.

KCRC's philosophy of family-centered care recognizes that the family is the constant in a child's life while health care providers vary over time. The center promotes families and professionals working together in all aspects of health care.

KCRC embraces the racial, ethnic, cultural, and economic diversity of families. The Center's health care programs are designed to be flexible, friendly, accessible, and responsive to patients and families, and other customer needs.
