Collaboration in Research
Our integration with other clinical and basic science departments across UVA contributes to a collegial environment for research and multiple bridges for interdisciplinary collaboration.
Trainees, allied health care providers, and faculty from around the Commonwealth gather each spring for our annual Pediatric Research Symposia, including both platform and poster presentations. Our research activities involve not only basic science and clinical studies, but also research in medical education, quality of care, and medical ethics.
Our involvement in research includes:
- 180 active clinical protocols
- 50% of faculty engaged in clinical research
- 11 NIH (National Institutes of Health) grants
- $8 million total annual grant funding
This is an advantage of being a part of Mr. Jefferson's "Academical Village," with interactions with the School of Law, Curry School of Education, and Darden School of Business.
Collaborative research "bridges" also extend across the U.S. and the globe, with a number of ongoing programs in Central and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Our activities include:
Commitment to Leadership
Members of the Department of Pediatrics have taken advantage of our multiple bridges to fill many leadership roles at UVA. Their involvement underscores the institutional commitment of the Department of Pediatrics to the principles laid down by Thomas Jefferson, founder of the University. Our faculty are committed also to community service, with extensive involvement in Charlottesville, nationally, and medical missions in Haiti. These bridges are certainly the most personal, and highlight the individual impact of our efforts:
- Stephen Borowitz: Chief Medical Information Officer, UVA Health System
- Robert Boyle: Chair Medical Ethics Committee, Transfusion Committee, UVA Health System
- Arthur Garson: Provost, University of Virginia
- Ariel Gomez: Vice-President for Research, UVA
- Leigh Grossman: Vice Provost for International Affairs, UVA
- Sharon Hostler: Interim Dean, Senior Associate Dean, UVA School of Medicine
- John Kattwinkel: Chair, Research Ethics Committee, UVA SOM
- Karen Rheuban: Senior Associate Dean for External Affairs, UVA SOM
- Ronald Turner: Associate Dean for Clinical Research, UVA SOM
It is truly a privilege to work with such a dedicated and talented team in the care and service of our current and future patients and their families.
With warm regards,
Robert L. Chevalier, M.D.
