Current Research Activities -

The Effects of Cosmic Radiation on Astrocyte Activation
(UVA and NASA Funded)
We are trying to characterize the response of astrocytes in mice exposed to simulated cosmic radiation in the form of 56Fe (iron) through traditional immunohistochemistry techniques. We are also using a transgenic mouse model where the gene for luciferase is joined to the GFAP promoter in order to develop a spatio-temporal map of gliosis through in vivo bioluminescence imaging. Collaborative effort with Andy Obenaus of Loma Linda University.

Characterization of the Retinal Glial Response to Spaceflight (NASA Biospecimen Exchange Program)
We are attempting to determine if spaceflight causes gliotic lesions in the retina of mice through the activation of Muller Cells.  Read the article as published in the UVA July issue of LINK.
