ANTIMICROBIAL SUSCEPTIBILITY PROFILES

The Antimicrobial Susceptibility Profiles for 1999 are soon to be available for distribution. They will be distributed to those groups who have requested them in the past in the form of pocket cards. If you would like some cards for yourself and/or an area, please contact Heather Proctor in clinical microbiology at 4-8059.

SUSCEPTIBILITY TESTING

A reminder that MIC susceptibility testing for Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is available as a send out test. An additional order is required. Please contact the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at 4-8052 for further instructions for this test.

DAVIS LABORATORY DIRECTOR CHANGE

Dr. David Normansell, director of the Davis Laboratory has retired effective 6-30-00.

The new director of this laboratory division is Orieji Illoh, M.D. Dr. Illoh is board certified in both clinical and anatomic pathology. She graduated medical school from Ahmadu Bellow University in Zaire, Nigeria and did her residency at Howard University. During the past year she has served as the Blood Bank Fellow at the University of Virginia Health System. Dr. Illoh can be reached as follows:

PRENATAL SCREENING FOR DOWN’S SYNDROME (Triple Test)

A reminder that all three tests (AFP, HCG, UE3) must be requested by any physician for the timely performance of "Triple" screening on patients. Failure to indicate that all three tests are being requested will result in delay of patient results as the laboratory may only perform those tests specifically indicated by the requesting physician/health care provider.

 

REFERENCE INTERVAL (NORMAL RANGE) CHANGES FOR COAGULATION TESTS

Prothrombin Time (PT) and Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (aPTT):

Due to a manufacturer's change in the reagent calibrator, the PT and aPTT have been altered to reflect this new calibration. Effective June 21st, The PT reference interval for the optical method (MDA-180) is 11.5 to 14.5 seconds. The aPTT reference interval for the optical method (MDA-180) is 21.7 to 33.7 seconds.

Therapeutic Range for Heparin aPTT:

Effective June 21st, the aPTT therapeutic range for Heparin with an equivalent value of 0.3 to 0.7 Anti-Xa Units/mL is 72 to 139 seconds.

PHLEBOTOMY SERVICES PROVIDED BY CLINICAL LABORATORIES

Routine phlebotomy services are provided between the hours of 0530 and 2200. Morning collection starts at 0530 followed by routine blood collection rounds at 0800, 1000, 1200, 1400, 1600, 1800, 2000, and 2200.

All laboratory orders for the 0530 collection must be entered into MIS by 0325 that morning for collection by the phlebotomy team. All lab orders for each of the other scheduled collection times must be entered into MIS prior to the scheduled collection time in order for those specimens to be drawn during the specified collection time. Routine orders placed after that time are automatically scheduled for the next collection. Example: A "CBC Today" ordered at 1045 would be included in the phlebotomy rounds scheduled for 1200.

Blood collection by the phlebotomy team includes these schedules:

  • ROUTINE (such as "Today")

  • TIMED (orders entered for specific times such as "Today at 1800")

  • SCHEDULED STAT (such as "STAT Today")

Between 2200 and 0325, any lab order entered with the schedule of TODAY would be collected during morning collection beginning at 0530 hours.

TIPS

  • When ordering blood products in MIS that require cross matching, carefully review the information from "retrieval" regarding when the last T & S or Type and Hold specimen was drawn before answering whether a new specimen is required. An inaccurate answer could delay processing of your order.

  • The phlebotomy team obtains only blood specimens. Non-blood specimens (urine, sputum, CSF, etc.) need to be obtained by physicians or unit staff.

  • Central line draws and "STAT Collected" blood collections are the responsibility of physicians and unit staff.

Unit staff should carefully maintain the "CENTRAL LINE" indicator in MIS since this determines whether or not the phlebotomy team receives the request to collect the blood specimens. If the indicator is turned "ON", the phlebotomy team will receive no requests for blood collection. If the indicator is turned "OFF", the phlebotomy team will receive all routine requests for blood collection.
