BENEFITS PROVIDED TO
UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA HEALTH SYSTEM HOUSESTAFF

The information provided represents a brief summary of current housestaff benefits.  All housestaff members will be notified, in writing, prior to effecting any changes in benefits.  More detailed information can be obtained from the Housestaff Manual or from the Medical Staff and Residency Office. 

  1. Liability Insurance -- All residents of the University of Virginia Medical Center are provided malpractice insurance. This policy provides coverage for alleged acts of medical negligence (both commission and omission) only if the alleged negligent act was performed in the scope of employment at the University of Virginia Medical Center or one of its affiliated health care facilities. Coverage is not extended for employment opportunities which you seek or arrange on your own (i.e., moonlighting). Additional information is contained in the housestaff manual.

  2. Temporary Licensure -- All Medical housestaff are required to obtain a temporary State of Virginia license to practice while employed in an internship, residency, or fellowship training program. Practice under this license is confined strictly to persons who are bona fide patients within the hospital or who receive treatment and advice in an organized outpatient department of the hospital. Temporary licenses are issued annually. The $10.00 license fee is paid by the hospital and issuance/renewal are coordinated by the Medical Staff and Residency Office.

  3. Full licensure -- Full licensure to practice medicine in the State of Virginia is required of housestaff members remaining in graduate medical education programs for a period longer than six years. Information on securing permanent licensure can be obtained from the State Board of Medicine in Richmond.

  4. Health Insurance -- MAMSI:
    Through the MAMSI option, housetaff are eligible for free health coverage for themselves and their families when care is provided through the extensive UVa health network-- including access to full subspeciality tertiary care. Additional options for coverage are detailed on the housestaff benefits website for those who prefer to seek care out of network.

  5. Housestaff Supplemental Health Care -- Supplemental insurance coverage provided to housestaff members and their dependents who are covered under the QualChoice Plan only. The Housestaff Supplemental Health Care provides payment for deductible, co-payments, and some non-covered items relate to services provided at the University of Virginia.

  6. Vacations and Leaves of Absence -- Members of the Housestaff should be allowed three weeks of vacation time (unless otherwise specified by their department chairman) and up to four weeks of sick leave time per year. Beyond this, exceptional cases will be considered on an individual basis. In this regard, up to four weeks of additional leave time may be granted in cases of unusual illness, disability, or as maternity leave. This additional leave would be granted only when both Hospital Administration and departmental chairmen agree that the circumstances are exceptional. Leave will be granted through the Medical Staff and Residency Office.

  7. Disability Insurance -- provided for all housestaff at no cost through UNUM. For both partial or full disability, pays 70% of current salary after a 90-day elimination period.

  8. Life Insurance -- provided for all housestaff at no cost through The Guardian.

  9. Uniforms and Laundering of Uniforms -- provided at no cost to housestaff.

  10. On-Call Meals -- provided to housestaff members required to remain overnight in the hospital in an on-call capacity (does not include overnight shifts in the Emergency Department); $7.00/night on-call.

  11. On-Call Rooms -- provided to all services.

  12. Parking -- Parking is available for all housestaff and is subsidized up to $600/year which covers the full cost for all housestaff parked in the South Garage adjacent to the hospital. Assignments are made and waiting lists for lot changes are maintained by the Medical Staff and Residency Office.

  13. Housestaff Lounge -- A lounge for housestaff members only is provided on Level 6 of University Hospital.

  14. Gym Facilities -- A small gym with workout equipment, available to housestaff and medical students, is located on the ground floor of Barringer in the Hospital West complex. The door combination can be obtained from the Medical Staff and Residency Office.

  15. University Intramural Facilities -- Housestaff members are eligible to purchase a University Intramural Pass at a cost of $120.00 per year. An additional discount of $35.00 is provided to housestaff members through the Medical Staff and Residency Office.

  16. Business Cards -- Provided to all housestaff by the Medical Staff and Residency Office.

  17. Prescription Pads -- Provided to all housestaff by the Medical Staff and Residency Office.

  18. Library Resources -- The Claude Moore Health Sciences Library provides numerous resources for housestaff, including MEDLINE, Computer Lab, etc.

  19. Grievance Procedure and Due Process Guidelines -- Available upon request in the Medical Staff and Residency Office.

The Department of Emergency Medicine provides the following additional benefits:
  • Memberships in the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, Emergency Medicine Residents Association, and American College of Emergency Medicine
  • An annual text book allowance of $300
  • Funding for resident research
  • Funding is available for residents to present original research at national or regional meetings
