This training program is based on our belief that the practice of emergency medicine is best learned in the ED and other clinical areas where critical care is provided. Consequently, the majority of training will be accomplished in the ED and ICUs. The critical care experience is balanced by a variety of rotations where the resident will further expand general medical knowledge and round out their education.
We believe that emergency medicine residents We recognize the importance of and welcome the educational experiences provided by our non-emergency medicine colleagues. This training program offers graduated experience. The PGY-1 resident will be provided an environment in which to develop an identity as an emergency physician and to focus on developing clinical skills and expanding general medical knowledge. The PGY-2 and 3 residents will continue to expand their medical knowledge while developing and refining clinical, interpersonal, administrative, and academic skills through increased responsibility as training progresses. A successful program is one where a thirst for knowledge is ever apparent. Curiosity and a desire to learn is imperative and will foster participation in academic pursuits. Successful residents in this program will achieve several goals. First is developing the appropriate knowledge, skills, and judgment that will allow them to be competent and empathic physicians. Second is the recognition and performance of his/her role as an educator of patients, families, students, peers, and ancillary personnel such as nurses, paramedics, and EMTs. Finally, the emergency medicine resident will aspire to the highest standards of clinical and intellectual excellence; Expecting and desiring a lifetime of continued learning and professional development.
The Department will foster a sense of family and camaraderie between residents and faculty such that all develop a conviction that the three years in training will be a time of tremendous personal and intellectual growth. We are excited by your opportunities in emergency medicine at UVA. return to top |
