Physician Shadow Program
|
Want to see what goes on during an ER Shift?
The UVA Department of Emergency Medicine invites high school and college undergraduate students to come see what a "typical" day is like for an Emergency Physician.
Shadowing opportunities are available within the department, given that the student has an EM physician sponsor. We also require that you obtain a UVA Health System ID badge and complete necessary paperwork prior to your first session.
You may contact our faculty directly for their schedule availability and to arrange your shadowing sessions. Please click on this link for a list of EM faculty.
Expectations:
1) Attire- please come professionally, but comfortably, dressed (ties not needed, but a collared shirt and pants for men and a non-sleeveless top and pants for girls. No jeans!) Feel free to wear scrubs if you have them.
2) You must wear comfortable shoes- we will be walking fast and a lot. We have a short coat we can lend you. Wear your ID at all times.
3) Come on time.
4) Finally, be forewarned that you will see many kinds of patients, disease pathology and invasive procedures in the ED (there is no predicting what any of these shifts are going to be like), so bring a strong stomach. We hope to make this experience a worthwhile one for you.
