Ventricular Septal DefectNancy McDaniel M.D.The heart in this defect has four chambers and four valves. The defect is a hole between the right and left pumping chambers or a ventricular septal defect. The hole can be very small and cause no problems, or the hole may be very large and cause the baby to not feed and grow well. Small holes often close with continued growth of the child. Large holes require surgical closure.
