UVA Cancer Center and VCU Massey Cancer Center Each Awarded $1 Million Grant for Healthcare Outreach in Southside and Far Southwestern Virginia Regions
The Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission has awarded $1 million each to the University of Virginia Cancer Center and to the Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center. The grants will fund new programs to provide and promote more advanced health care, cancer prevention and control, clinical trials, and health literacy and education services in tobacco-dependent counties in southside and far southwestern Virginia.

Pierrick G. Fournier, Ph.D., a research instructor at the University of Virginia Health System, is the first recipient of the Bone and Cancer Foundation's Noa Schwartz Siris Research Award for his study, "T Cells in Bone Metastases and Role of the Bone Microenvironment."

UVA Program Awards $10 Million to University Investigators To Study Diseases Associated with Smoking
Nine researchers at the University of Virginia have been awarded a total of $10 million over three years from the UVA Tobacco Research Program to advance the study of diseases associated with smoking. The program was created in 2007 following a gift from Philip Morris USA (PM USA) to the University.

A multidisciplinary team of researchers, led by University of Virginia Professor of Radiology and Biomedical Engineer Stuart S. Berr, Ph.D., has received a $2 million grant from the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the purchase of a cyclotron to expand imaging research at UVA.

Friday night was a special night at the UVA women's basketball game. Both UVA coach Debbie Ryan and N.C. State coach Kay Yow have survived cancer. That's why UVA Health System chose that game as the first general public presentation of the drawings for the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center.
