The Office of Clinical Research (OCR) at the Cancer Center supports the conduct of cancer clinical trials at the University of Virginia. The Cancer Center’s Protocol Review Committee provides scientific and clinical review of all in-house and industry-supported clinical protocols and ensures that all protocols meet the ethical standards of the university and are appropriate for the patient populations served by the Cancer Center. The OCR publicizes protocol availability to physicians and health care personnel in the Cancer Center. The Cancer Center’s clinical trials consist of trials which are investigator-initiated, trials supported by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), or trials sponsored by the pharmaceutical industry. Investigator-initiated clinical trials are trials that emerge from the work done by investigators and laboratories at the Cancer Center. The NCI’s Clinical Trials Cooperative Group Program supports multiinstitutional clinical trials of new cancer treatments in the United States, Canada, and Europe. The Cancer Center is a full member of several of the NCI-Cooperative Groups including the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG), the Children's Oncology Group (COG), and the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group (ACOSOG), and an affiliate member of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) and the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG). Finally, the Cancer Center participates in a number of studies sponsored by the pharmaceutical industry that evaluate promising new drugs for cancer treatment that are not yet FDA-approved. |
