Curriculum, PhD in Biomedical Engineering

PhD Degree Academic Requirements:

1. Twelve courses of 3 graded credits or more past the bachelor's degree or a minimum of 36 credit hours (including any completed during a Master's program).

NOTE:
Students who enter the program already holding a Master's degree in an engineering discipline from a school other than the University of Virginia must take 12 credits of coursework past the MS, in addition to the core BME courses (see number 2 below).

These 12 credits must include
at least 2 advanced BIOM courses and 1 advanced Life Science course (see number 3.b. Below).

2. A curriculum (or prior coursework) containing:

a. BIOM 601 Physiology I
b. BIOM 602 Physiology II
c. BIOM 610 Biomedical Instrumentation I
d. BIOM 611 Biomedical Instrumentation II

3. A curriculum containing:

a. 6 credits of graduate mathematics or mathematics-intensive courses, excluding APMA 643 Statistics

b. At least 2 advanced BIOM courses and 1 advanced Life Sciences course (Life Sciences course must be at least 3 credits)

c. A sequence of 2 advanced engineering courses in one area of concentration (for example, ChE 625, 730)

d. At least 9 credits of coursework from 3. a.-c. must be at the 700-level or above.

Courses in 3.a.-c. may not be double-counted (for example, the same course can not be used to fulfill the advanced BIOM course requirement and the advanced Life Sciences course requirement).

NOTE:
See Appendix II which contains a list of approved mathematics-intensive courses, a list of courses with Life Sciences content, and a list of frequently taken courses which are suggested for the doctoral program of study in the second and third years.

4. Completion of coursework with a GPA of at least 3.0.

5. Passage of the Comprehensive Examination (see Section 4.7.4 below).

6. Defense of Dissertation Proposal (see Section 4.7.5 below).

7. Completion of at least 24 credit hours of research.

8. Preparation of a PhD Dissertation following SEAS guidelines.

9. Passage of an oral final PhD examination (see Section 4.7.6 below).

NOTES TO PHD DEGREE ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS:
1. Students with equivalent prior course work may place out of some or all of the classes listed in section 2. above by obtaining written permission from the course instructor. Approval forms can be obtained from the Graduate Program Coordinator. Prior courses not applied to a previous degree may be transferred for degree credit (see section 4.4.3).

2. Research credit does not count towards requirement

1. Research credit is obtained by signing up for BIOM 999.

PhD Administrative Requirements:

1. Form Doctoral Advisory Committee and file FORM G103 no later than the end of the first semester of doctoral study.

2. File a FORM G102 Doctoral Degree Plan of Study no later than the fourth semester of doctoral study (but preferably sooner).

3. Present dissertation research at the end of the third year of study and again in the Spring before expected graduation in the Annual Graduate Research Symposium.

4. Complete two semesters of BME Teaching Experience.

5. Attend all BME seminars and sign up for BIOM 703/704 (0 course credit).
